Heya Sam,
I recently noticed that it's been a year (tempus fugit) since Hatch-dawg took his goldfishing trip - and I decided to pop by and see what you were up to. I'm blown away!
I must say, I'm getting the impression that you were keeping things a bit tame, in keeping with SPG's "family friendly" image, and that freedom from the band has allowed you to bust out with a bunch of that held-back creativity. Your recent work (both visual and musical) seems more raw, more edgy and, in all honesty, more passionate. I hope you're able to keep that fire stoked!
I discovered your work via your collaboration with the Bennetts, of course - but I must confess that the merging of Samhears and SPG always seemed a little "square peg, round hole" to me. I'm one of those weirdoes who still listens to albums front-to-back - and, while I loved individual songs such as Space Giant and Only Human, they never quite fit the overall package; and better-meshing songs like Leopold Expiditus and Go Spine Go seemed more the exception than the rule. Now, though, as I listen to your new Movie Monsters album on Bandcamp, I'm hearing many similar sounds and concepts to those previous numbers - but weaving together in a melodic, cohesive whole. It's a powerful album - and, frankly, something I don't think would have been possible under the SPG bailiwick.
In short, your new art and new album have rekindled my fandom and, I daresay, raised it to a level above my enjoyment of your SPG contributions. Keep on producing! I wish you loads of success.
